Sending automated DMs on Instagram
You can now automatically send a DM to someone the second they follow you on Instagram.
Cool tech, right? And here’s why I WON’T be doing that.
Just because you can use AI… Doesn’t mean you should
Look, I’m very pro-AI. I run a business teaching women how to use it to save time, make money, and stay sane. But I’m also very pro-strategy. And this? This is not a strategy.
If someone follows me and gets an immediate “Hey babe! So excited you’re here! Wanna check out my offer?” DM… They know it was AI, it wasn’t me.
No one’s typing out heartfelt messages within 0.3 seconds of a follow. It’s robotic. It’s obvious. And worst of all? It breaks trust before we’ve even built any.
You Need to Ask: What’s the actual point?
AI is sexy. Automation is tempting. But you need to get real with yourself:
- Are you trying to build connection?
- Or are you trying to make sales?
If it’s connection, then automating a fake conversation is literally doing the opposite. Connection happens when someone feels like they’re talking to a real human. Not a canned bot that’s DMing 200 people a day with the same “so glad you’re here” schtick.
If it’s sales… please. They just followed you. You’re already pitching them? Calm down. You haven’t even taken them on a date yet and you’re asking them to move in.
(Unless you sell vibrators, in which case… maybe it tracks.)
Strategy > Shortcuts
Yes, AI can do incredible things. It’s changed how we run businesses. But the brands that stand out? The ones people actually want to buy from? They still sound like humans. They still build trust. And trust isn’t built with tricks. It’s built with consistency, clarity, and content that feels real.
So no, I’m not auto-DMing people. I’m letting them hang around first. Watch some stories. Read a few posts. Decide if I’m their vibe.
And then, if they want to chat, they will.
Final Thought: If it feels desperate, it probably is
I’m all for working smarter, not harder. But I’m also not trying to slide into someone’s inbox before they’ve even had a chance to creep my profile.
AI is a tool. It should make your life easier – not make your audience roll their eyes.
So next time you’re tempted to automate a connection? Ask yourself who it’s really for.
Because if it’s not building trust or driving real conversions? Then what the hell is it doing?
